Facebook Group

We made a Face book group adding all members of the crew and cast so we could contact all our contributors easily and quickly. This seemed to be the best option in contacting everyone as we are all regular users on the social networking site. This helped us to inform everyone on filming times and locations and it abled us to see what members could not make it that due to to reasons of their own.

Props

  • Empty beer bottles and cans - free - could retrieve out of recycling bins.
  • Cups - £1- £3.14 - Preferably Red or Blue but any colour would surfice if not.
  • Cigarettes - provided by the smokers in the cast and crew.
  • Baggies - supplied by the cast and crew.
  • Origano -provided by the owners of the house we are filming.
  • Sherbet - 20p per bag.
  • Pizza - £2.99 per pizza.
  • Magazines - Provided by the household.
  • Lightsaber - Provided by Jake.
  • Whip - Provided by Jake.
  • Costumes - Provided by Cast
Due to the narrative of our sequence we have a lot of props a long with actors as we want to get the full affect of a wild party. We preferably want to use the well known 'Red Cups' to achieve the american party feel but as our filming schedule has been brought forward we dont know if they will arrive on time due to the delivary schedule so we have decided that using just average pastic cups wont be as affective but will still give us a teenage party feel. Things such a Origano, Baggies, cigarettes and sherbet are all aimed at resembling drugs to show that teenagers like to experiment. We are also aiming to buy around 3-4 pizzas to give it a laid back, carefree party feel and not a dinner party/gathering feel. Along side all of this the sequence will be shot in cast/crew members houses so any props/furniture in the rooms will add to a house party location.

Production Treatment

Music Video – Post Break Up Sex – The Vaccines

Duration – 2.56 minutes.

Audience – The main target audience is males and females aged 16-25 who listen to the indie genre of music. Alongside an older audience who also like to listen to that genre aswell as maybe relating to the lyrics. The video will not be targeted at any one under the age of 16 for 2 reasons. 1. due to its name – Post Break-up Sex and 2. because the legal age of consenting sex is 16 and over. Some of the themes illustrated through the video such as alcohol, drugs and sex will not be appropriate for people under this age.

Resume – The main narrative in our video is the idea that it is the morning after a party and the main protagonist (Played by Sam Massey-Edwards) is walking around the house and each room he enters plays a different scenario in a different location. In the bedrooms there will be two people in bed looking awkward and somewhat depressed as if they are regretting the actions they have taken the previous night. Other people are shown to be passed out throughout the house, others in the kitchen drinking coffee trying to recover from the night’s events. The video is a performance piece therefore the main protagonist will be lip-syncing throughout the video.

Suggested Elements – We are going to use 4 main locations in our video. They consist of 4 houses where a range of rooms will be used. Rooms such as the bedrooms will be repeated for each house that will be provided by the cast and crew including -

  • Caitlin O’shea’s house - Bedroom & Living Room.
  • Jake Perry-Gardner’s house – Bathroom.
  • Yemi Moses house – Cast member.
  • Eloise Bickle’s house – Kitchen.

We will also be using lots of props for our video production so we can create the ‘after math’ atmosphere. The main products that will be used for are props are –

  • Empty beer bottles
  • Empty drink cans
  • Red cups
  • Blue cups
  • Cigarettes (both herbal and natural)
  • Baggies
  • Oregano
  • Sherbet
  • Pizza
  • Pizza boxes
  • Magazines
  • Light sabers (toys)
  • Whip (toys)

We also have ideas for main costumes that will be worn by the our main character and chosen extras –

  • Pirate hat
  • Cowboy hat
  • Robot mask
  • Army uniform
  • Boxing gloves and Thai fighting kit.
  • Casual Wear (Creased, Not worn properly and possibly covered in stains..

Filming - We want to get the filming done as quickly as possible as we do not want people dropping out as actors. This will postpone filming for longer which will waste time in finding new actors and actresses to play as extras and main cast members. We hope to spend two to three weeks worth of filming but this seems a task in it selfs as due to the number of actors/actresses in our production we need to make sure we all are able to film together. The rest of the duration will be spent collecting our footage and with the rest of the time remaining spent on editing the production and the creation of other utilities such as posters and CD covers.

Budget Estimation - As we plan to buy props for our video our estimated budget is £50.00

Costumes and Make-Up

The plot of our sequence is basically waking up the morning after a wild party. Some people will have smudged lipstick marks on there faces, whilst some will have words such as ‘Virgin’ or ‘Misunderstood’ written on there forehead suggesting they have passed out and have been pranked. The majority of our cast will have some sort of lipstick on there whether it’s smudged or words. These people are:

  • Sam M – smudged kiss mark on cheek.
  • Chris M – ‘Virgin’ written on his forehead.
  • Cameron – kiss mark on his cheek
  • Kirann – smudged kiss mark on cheek.
  • Jaymee – smudged lipstick around mouth.
  • Emma – Smudged lipstick around mouth.

Some people will wake up either fully clothed dressed in casual wear and some will be half dressed. As the nature of the sequence is waking up the morning after having post break up sex some of the girls will only be in there bra but with something covering so the audience have more of a hint of what’s gone on. This also applies to some of the boys, as they will be waking up with a girl suggesting they have both had regretful sex the night before. These people are:

  • Archie (Topless or Vest) + Yemi (Bra and Pants)
  • Jake (Topless or Vest) + Ellie (Bra and pants)
  • Cameron (Topless or Vest) + Kirann (Bra and pants)
  • Jaymee (Bra and pants) + Emma (Bra and Pants)

Some of the cast will also be wearing dressing up wear to make the party look more wild and laid back rather than it looking like a small get together. These people are:

  • Sam T – Cowboy
  • Vanessa - Robot

Locations

As the main protagonist wakes up from the morning after he will proceed to enter 4 different locations via a hallway. He then enters each location and walks into a different scenario all with the same context which is each couple just having had post break up sex the night before. This gives the video more narrative and makes it more interesting rather than the protagonist walking into a different room of the same house. The beginning of the sequence starts in caitlins bedroom where the protagonist will wake up and proceed to walk to the hallway, threw a door, and then into another bedroom. This will happen throughout the video with 3 different houses.

Shot list-Opening sequence.

In the process of planning our music video we have all decided upon a shot list:
  • Shot one- Birds eye view of the main protagonists, Sam lay on the bed slowly waking up. The camera stays still as the gets out of the bed.
  • Shot Two- Medium shot as he sits on the side of the bed and rubs his eyes. The camera tilts down as he reaches for his trousers.
  • Shot Three- Camera focuses on the trousers and tilts back up as he pulled them back on.
  • Shot Four- Cuts to a close up shot of his face as he yawns.
  • Shot Five- A close up as the music starts. As he begins to lip sync the camera slowly zooms out into hot six.
  • Shot Six- A long shot of Sam standing up and looking around whilst lip syncing
  • Shot Seven- Cuts to a medium shot of the room as the camera slowly zooms into someone lay on the floor.
  • Shot Eight-A Medium shot of someone sat holding their knees. The camera slowly zooms into their forehead as the camera focuses on the word 'Misunderstood' written on their face.
  • Shot Nine- Cuts backs to Sam as he walks up the stairs.

Mind Map - Brainstorm of production

This is a mind-map Brainstorm to finalize the ideas that we have created in order to produce our music video. This includes detail on the certain props that we may need, the main cast that will be focused on the most in the video, extras will be in the video however they will not be mentioned in the map due to the number of people casted in the production. Locations have also been mentioned, as we are shooting in four locations, its promotes easier filming by placing the scenes in certain houses. This will save us time when filming as we have a concrete choice of when and where certain settings are film.

Craig Davis

In accordance to Craig Davis’ analysis this video falls into the illustration category, as it is a straightforward performance video with a simple narrative. The music also fits the video as the editing is on the beat.

Genre

The word ‘indie’ comes from independent and possibly low budget in the making of the film, usually very simple videos without the need for special effects.

Category

This falls into the performance category as typical of the indie genre. It contains images throughout of a certain woman dancing, cutting away from the performance of the band, playing their instruments in most shots but are sometimes performing other physical activities.

Camera angles

Uses mostly medium shots and long shots with close up of the band members and the main characters in the video, in this case the Monroe doppelganger. Uses very little shots, which again relates to the genre as most indie videos we have looked also a very small verity of camera shots, displaying a mellow environment.

Camera movement

Slow zooms of the woman dancing to slow the pace of the genre and music. A very calm atmosphere is created through the slow movement of the camera as it creates the mellow setting that most indie music videos present. Hand held camera movement is used joining in with the blur effect (spoken about later in the ‘Editing’ section) as a first person view in the environment created by the music video. This creates a point of view shot for the audience to make them feel included in the video, possibly gaining a better experience from the video itself.

Editing

Blue effect is added to certain shots, joining with the point of view shot to give the idea that the 50’s setting of a bar is surreal and not all it seems to be. It could also show that this may be a dream for the band members as another shot shows the main singer writing a letter to the woman who plays the doppelganger. An iris effect is added when the Monroe doppelganger is dancing to show that she is being watched constantly by someone, possibly the band members themselves, as she is the center of attention and the main entertainment in the 50’s style club, shown by the spotlight on the woman (spoken about later in the lighting section)
